The film PUSHING THE ELEPHANT explores the long-term and often hidden effects of war on women and families. We encourage WOV chapters to use this film as part of their educational events. It tells the story of Rose Mapendo who was forced to leave her daughter behind when she fled the genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now she works to unite her family as she fights for the future of her country. This film demonstrates the need for local advocacy as well as the horror of gender-based violence.
PUSHING THE ELEPHANT started being broadcast nationwide on Independent Lens on March 29th. Please check your local listings here – we encourage all WOV to watch this film! Be sure to set your DVRs to record!
The Women of Vision national office has a DVD of this film which we can “loan” out to chapters who wish to screen it at an event. To request to borrow this film, please contact Laura Li. Or you may purchase PUSHING THE ELEPHANT here.
We encourage Women of Vision chapters to watch this film together. The attached PDF has some useful background and discussion topics. Find more film clips and great print and interactive resources here.

I saw this documentary and it was awesome. Gives a full understanding of the complex and heartbreaking decisions that many people in the world must make. In world of pain it teaches forgiveness. I recomend everyone watch it.
I watched this film this week and it was very moving and inspiring. Rose is a wonderful example of sharing God’s compassion with others and drawing on His strength for forgiveness.
You can help women become authors of change in their own lives…
